Tension/Compression Tapping Heads
About Tension/Compression Tapping Heads
A Tension/Compression tapping head has a built-in spring mechanism that allows the tapping head to axially float. This allows for adjustment of the position of the tap as needed to maintain synchronization of feed and speed. This method of tapping is robust and highly reliable, but requires spindle control that can quickly accelerate/decelerate since the tap must be extracted with a spindle reverse command issued by the controller. Tension/Compression tapping is supported for all Tormach PCNC mills with a sensorless vector spindle drive system.1
Our Tension/Compression tapping head is a modular tool holding system consisting of a TTS tapping chuck and quick-change tapping collets. It is compatible with inch taps (#0 – ½”) and metric taps (M1.6-M12.5) with ANSI shanks.
The Tension/Compression Tapping Head Kit includes a chuck and the complete set of 9 quick change collets. Both the chuck and the collets can also be purchased individually as needed.
1The Tension/Compression Tapping head is not recommended for use with PCNC 1100 Series 1, unless the Spindle Upgrade has been installed. For compatibility with non-Tormach CNC mills, please check with your mill manufacturer.
