Auto Reversing Tapping Heads
About Auto Reversing Tapping Heads
An Auto Reversing Tapping Head uses an internal gear/clutch mechanism to provide axial float, and reverse rotation when the head withdraws. The reversing gear automatically engages when the head retracts to remove the tap from the workpiece.
The auto-reversing tapping head utilizes quickchange rubberflex collets to secure each tap in the chuck. Each head uses a brake rod that is inserted into the spindle head casting and engages the reversing gear after a change in feed direction.
The reversing head comes in two sizes. Both sizes have an integrated TTS quick-change shank geometry. The Small Tapping Head covers #0 to ¼” (M2-M7) taps. The Large Tapping Head covers #8 to ½” (M4-M12) taps.
The auto-reversing tapping head is not recommended for tapping blind holes since the buildup of chips in the bottom of the hole can lead to excessive torque to the clutch mechanism and potential damage. Always use high quality taps designed for CNC operation. A hand tap is more likely to break when used in a CNC application. A spiral tap is often a better choice.
Auto reversing tapping heads are compatible with all Tormach PCNC mills and many other CNC brands.
