  • About Tormach Rotary Tables

    Our Motorized Rotary Tables are designed and built for everyday machining operations. These tables are popular with machine builders, manufacturing engineers, and OEMs looking for affordable rotary precision. These tables operate at 1800 degrees per minute (approx. 5 RPM) and utilize hydrodynamic bearing surfaces and manually operated table locks.

    We offer standalone motorized tables in several sizes and configurations. We also offer each table size integrated 4th axis kits for our PCNC mills. These kits include not only the motorized table, but electronic driver modules and wiring harnesses. Features include:

    • Direct Drive Transmission. Our tables utilize a direct drive shaft coupling instead of the belt drive design found on other motorized turntables. This approach eliminates side loading on the worm screw bearing.
    • Vertical or Horizontal Operation. Each table features ground mounting surfaces to allow mounting two ways, either vertically as a Rotary A-axis or horizontally as a C-axis.
    • Sealed Motor. The drive motor is specifically engineered for operation in a metal cutting environment. The motor mount has a sealing O-ring at the face and is completely sealed against cutting fluids, chips, and dust.
    • Adjustable Backlash. The engagement of the worm gear with respect to the ring gear can be adjusted to minimize backlash and compensate for wear over the tables lifetime.
    • Low Profile Clamp Kit. Convenient Clamps allow for quick and easy mounting without need for unwieldy strap clamps.

    Chucks and Accessories

    We also offer tailstocks and a large assortment of compatible chucks and collet closers suitable for general purpose rotary workholding. Options include:

    3 jaw chucks: 3 jaw chucks are easy to use and self-centering. They can be used to hold round or hex stock.

    4 jaw chucks: While 4 jaw chucks aren’t self-centering, they offer versatility in that they can be used to hold square/rectangular stock and can be used for off-center work.

    2 Jaw chucks: A self centering two jaw chuck is a convenient option for subtractive rapid prototyping

    5C Collet Holders and Closers: Collets are a great choice for holding slender round stock and will generally have less runout than 3 jaw chucks. We carry options for both the common 5C system.

    MT3 Collet and Drawbolt: The Center hole of the 8” rotary table has a #3 Morse taper (MT3). This collet and drawbolt allows mounting Tormach Tooling System® (TTS) holders on the rotary table, allowing TTS to hold a workpiece instead of a tool. Ideal for small diameter stock.

    The single most frequent question we receive about our 4-axis CNC kits is "How can they be so cheap?" This question is normally in the context of a comparison with models offered by Haas, Yuasa, or others where similar size tables start at $5000 to $7000. Our tables are an outstanding value for many 4-axis CNC applications, but they are not suitable for all applications. The Tormach rotary tables have differences which can be important in certain situations, such as:

    • Backlash. Premium 4-axis CNC table manufacturers often quote 15 arc seconds backlash. Our tables will have up to 30 arc seconds of backlash. Does it matter? That depends on the demands of your application. For some context, consider this: on an 8" diameter table, 30 arc seconds of amounts to approximately 0.0006" of linear backlash at the outer edge of the table.
    • Speed. Tormach 4-axis CNC rotary tables move 1800 degrees per minute (approximately 5 RPM). Most servo driven tables move much faster.
    • Table Locks. Any rotary table should be locked in place during heavy milling to prevent rotation. Conventional 4-axis CNC tables have integral pneumatic table locks, designed to be automatically actuated by CNC control. Tormach 4-axis CNC rotary tables have mechanical lever locks that need to be manually engaged.
    • Bearing Design. Tormach 4-axis CNC tables use hydrodynamic (oil film) bearing surfaces. They do not have ball bearings or roller bearings internal to the table.
