  • Snowflake Sprocket Ornament - Tormach 1100 Fusion 360

    Watch Now

This is my first ever video so please excuse the poor quality. I am learning how to use my new Tormach PCNC 1100 and Fusion360. This is a video of one of my first parts. It’s a snowflake/sprocket ornament made from 7075 alum. The tool paths aren't the most efficient but that is all part of learning how to use Fusion360. This is the first operation. I will try to follow up with a video showing the back and how I setup the part and generated the code in Fusion360.

AXIOM Beta Skeleton Enclosure CNC Milling

    Watch Now

AXIOM Beta parts are being manufactured with a Tormach CNC mill. An aluminum piece is milled from two sides with various tools involved to create the required shape, flatten the surfaces, drill holes and cut threads. The entire process takes around 20 minutes for one piece. The machines requires constant human supervision and some manual interactions. The parts are sandblasted and coated afterwards.

    Watch Now

In this week's video I mill a new backspacer for a Zero Tolerance 0220 framelock flipper out of Grade 2 titanium. I never liked the orange aluminum backspacer from ZT, but really like the rest of the knife. I removed the lanyard hole from my design as well. I will clean up the scratches with a scotch brite wheel on the grinder. I'm still deciding if I want to anodize or maybe stone wash it to match the handles. Thanks for watching!

  • How To Build A Robot

    Watch Now

Building a robot can be fun, easy, and fast! With this video I hope to demystify robotics and make it accessible to everyone.
A basic robot only contains a few parts! When designing and building a robot it can be tempting to focus on the details and spend endless days or even months on a project, but the core of robotics is quite simple. A power source, speed control, motor... there's not much to it.

For all the nerds out there, here's what I used in Mini Tento:

Drive motors - Robot DC Gearhead Motor w/ Encoder
    Speed Control - Sabertooth 2 x 5 RC
    Battery - Lectron Pro 7.4 volt - 1350mAh 25C Lipo Pack
    Rx - OrangeRx R615X

Tormach 440 PCNC- Aluminum Address Sign larger than work envelope

    Watch Now

Here is a video milling an address sign from some 3/4" 6061 T-6 aluminum plate. The sign is much larger than my 10" of X axis work envelope. I show in the video how I used a common origin and some pins to get this job completed. It actually turned out really well with no noticeable step where the overlap occurred on the center number 7. Thanks for watching!

  • making a sacrificial aluminum fixture plate on a Tormach PCNC 1100

    Watch Now

Here I'm making another sacrificial fixture plate for holding items that can't be held easily in a vise. Instead of removing the vise to do the milling I can mount this in my vise, do the work and take it right back out.

Comes in handy and keeps me from having to indicate the vise after re-mounting it since it never gets removed.

Part One of making a solid copper cylinder head gasket on my Tormach Mill. The idea is to make a 2 D drawing of the original gasket in AutoCad then using Iron Cad make it into a solid model to send to Sprut Cam and here generate the G-code for the programme.
The initial attempt showed I was well out with the positioning of some of the holes so it was re-drawn and corrected before cutting the shape in Tulip Wood. The second attempt was spot on for accuracy. A nice simple job .

  • Quick And Easy Machined Checkering

    Watch Now

It's possible to quickly create complex interference patterns using large diameter tools such as fly cutters, rather than using CNC tool paths to slowly create the desired pattern. I had previously done some quick and easy machine checkering experiments with the Tormach SuperFly, but I just saw a Tormach newsletter article that described what they call face knurling, so I decided to try it again using the larger diameter SuperDuperFly cutter that I recently built (as described in a previous video).

    Here's the Tormach article:

    http://www.tormach.com/blog/face-knurling-with-a-tormach-pcnc-mill

If you'd like to make your own face knurling (quick and easy machine checkering) tool for a Tormach Tooling System machine, you could add a cutting bar to the Tormach TTS machinable blank.

Or, you could use your existing fly cutting bar as I did, or make your own checkering bar for your fly cutter head.

  • Tormach PCNC 1100 - Selecting the Correct End Mill for Finishing

    Watch Now

Cut details are here in the description.

I had some trouble finishing a part at full depth of cut with a 1/2" end mill some time ago. Chatter was so severe that I thought my brain was going to ooze out of my ears. (As soon as it started I put on hearing protection.) I did some very significant testing of that end mill to try to determine the parameters that were causing the problem. When I couldn't eliminate the problem, I switched to a different tool. I cheaped out on the first end mill and paid the price. This video documents the differences between the cuts by the different tools.

It's not a perfect apples to apples comparison, but the results are so wildly different that it would be difficult to imagine how the outcome isn't significantly improved.

    Tool #1 cut:
Tool: 1/2" 2F, HSS, TiCN coated, helix angle 30°, 2.00" length of cut
Tool holder: Tormach TTS set screw
    Tool stick out: 2.412"
    DOC: 1.250"
    WOC: .010"
    Feed: 20 IPM
    Speed: 2000 RPM
    Material: 6061 aluminum

    Tool #2 cut:
Tool: 1/2" 3F, carbide, ZrN coated, helix angle 30°, 1.50" length of cut
    Tool holder: Tormach TTS ER20
    Tool stick out: 2.045"
    DOC: .950"
    WOC: .010"
    Feed: 20 IPM
    Speed: 2500 RPM
    Material: 6061 aluminum

Having performed a *lot* of test cuts with Tool #1, if I had increased the speed of the spindle on Tool #1, the chatter would have gotten more severe. It wanted a very thick chip. I haven't tested Tool #2 nearly as exhaustively, but it doesn't display *any* of the chatter characteristics of Tool #1 and it makes a fantastic surface finish. If it's making rainbows on the aluminum, I'm a happy guy.

Face Mill Aluminum Tormach PCNC 1100

    Watch Now

This is my second machine operation on my new Tormach. I am taking a .312" sheet of 6061 aluminum down to .25". The first attempt at this operation I used the Surfacing Wizard in Mach 3 for the Tormach which works but is setup differently than I would like. So I wrote my own G-Code and ran it this way. I am sure there are better ways to accomplish the same goal. My goal for tonight was to get the material machined and not break anything. At least that I was successful at. More to come in the future.

Doing a short production run for a friend on the Duality Lathe. He requested a handful of aluminum spikes for his autocross car to make the cones fear him, so this is what I came up with. Because Ray's Car™.

I bothered to upload the video because it documents the effects of SFM (surface feet per minute) on the formation of the chips during turning operations. There's clearly a large difference in the shape of the chips on the first few passes (high SFM) versus the last few passes (low SFM) since the spindle RPM is held constant.

Tormach SuperFly - Great For Smaller Machines

    Watch Now

I'm trashing my brazed carbide shell mill and scrapping my plans to spend $450 on a carbide insert shell mill. For small milling machines with 3 HP or less, the single carbide insert of the SuperFly has less drag and actually removes material faster. Others have gotten up to 8 cubic inches a minute removal rate with aluminum.

I had read the good reviews, but nothing compares to trying it myself. I wasn't pushing it at all, but I was very impressed. I could tell it'd hog out a lot more material with a higher spindle speed, higher feed rate and greater depth of cut. It felt like it was loafing, but I was using it as a fly cutter and was more interested in making a light skim cut with nice surface finish, and it delivered!

The SuperFly can double as a fly cutter for fine surface finish and a shell mill for high material removal rates. Do both with no tool changes! Take heavy cuts to remove material quickly and follow with a skim cut for the best surface finish.

I love the fact that it uses only one carbide insert. That gives a great surface finish, on machines with low power spindles it removes more material than the multi-insert shell mills that waste a lot of the sparse energy in making heat instead of making chips, and it's cheap to tool up the SuperFly and cheap and easy to recover from a crash. I bought ten Korloy inserts for steel and ten for aluminum for under $100 delivered on eBay, and that's about $1.20 every time I switch to a new carbide cutting surface!

I was only turning 800 RPM, the depth of cut was approximately .010" and the feed rate was about 1.5 IPM. I was facing a 2.5" wide bar of 6061 T6 aluminum.

This video shows the CNC machining of a second fixture plate to make bushing housings. The fixture is designed to hold 8 parts simultaneously, just like the first fixture.

Five tools were used; 1/2" 3 flute rougher, 3/8" 2 flute end mill (profiling and "face milling"), 1/4" spot drill, 5/16" drill (hole prep for hand tapping). Trochoidal tool paths were used on full width roughing cuts.

  • Tormach sight drill cycles

    Watch Now

This is a short video of some short drill cycles. So short that it is much faster to change the part than the drill. Each part needs 2 different size holes. A good fixture and air to eject the part make it run like a dream. The remote cycle start button is also a big time saver. ( Just an old PS2 mouse with the ball removed ) More info in the Tormach forum at CNC zone dot com. Search drill cycle

This is a video of a simple speed and brake test of the new Tormach spinde upgrade. The dynamic braking is awesome ! Also the variable "Dwell" make for a pretty snappy response. If you watch the Mach 3 screen you can see just how close the dwell is timed. Good work John !
