1 Month Until Moving Day: Building Update 2September 18, 2013 by: Greg Jackson
This spring we mentioned the construction of our new facility. It’s been an exciting summer, with the builders making rapid progress while we continued our focus on lathe and grinder development. The new facility is going up about 1/4 mile from our current offices and I get a clear view of the building site out of my window.
After a few weeks of pushing dirt around and pouring footings, the building walls seemed to pop up in a matter of hours. The basic construction method used is precast insulated concrete panels. It took 13 flatbed trucks to bring in all the panels. The steel went up shortly after the walls.
Several days later, a pretty big work crew showed up to pour the slab floor. Looks like a messy job…
Then several weeks of interior framing, drywall, plumbing, and electrical work. Here’s the metal stud framing in progress.
Even with the best laid plans, there are still plenty of changes and revisions in process. Sometimes, what looks good on the plan doesn’t seem quite right in person. After bringing the logistics team down to the future warehouse space for some input, it was clear that we needed to do a few modifications to the floor plan to make it work.
Here’s the exterior as it looked a few weeks ago. Since then, we’ve gotten blacktop and lights in the parking lot, and they began work on a sign that will sit near the lot entrance.
The back side has a 2 loading docks that will really help our shipping and receiving team that’s been making due with with a single street level dock for too long.
We’ll have a bit of a disturbance of business at the end of October, when we have moving day. With careful planning we’re hoping that product shipments will only be down for a couple days or so.
Sorry to be a little light on CNC classes this summer. As soon as we get moved in the larger training facility it will allow us to have larger classes. We’re also hearing interest in CAM classes and I expect we’ll need lathe classes as well. Those are a few of the many reasons we needed to build a larger facility.
