Rotary Tables
The Tormach Motorized Rotary Tables are designed and built for machining operations that involve large forces, cutting fluids, and frequent operation. These are the same tables used to create the PCNC 1100 4th axis option. The tables are popular with machine builders, manufacturing engineers, and OEMs. Tables are offered motorized, with a high performance stepper motor, or without motor. When sold without tables have a NEMA motor mount and we include a helical style motor coupler.

Design
The tables utilizes a direct drive principle instead of a belt drive. This approach avoids the problems of side loading on the worm screw bearing. Motorized tables include a Tormach MTM series (Machine Tool Motor), specially designed for operation in a metal cutting environment. It is totally sealed against cutting fluids, chips, and dust. The motor mount has a sealing O-ring at the face. In horizontal operation the oversized coolant channels direct the coolant to your table channels. In vertical operation the table offers flat surfaces for rigid clamping both in front and behind.
The backside clamping surface is a feature that some rotary table designs do not offer. T bolts, nuts, and low profile clamp bars are all included. There is no need for unwieldy step blocks; the low profile clamps allow for extra work piece clearance.

Application
Note
Customers have asked us to supply tables with standard NEMA motor mounts so they can use their own motors. While we are happy to supply these, there is a caveat on motor speed. We do not set a specific speed limit, but
integrators should be aware that higher speeds increase wear. In our own applications we limit motor speed to a very conservative 450 RPM, 5 RPM table speed. A 5000 RPM servo motor without speed limits could probably kill a rotary table in short order.

FAQ
The single most frequent
question we receive is
"How can they be so
cheap?" This question
is normally in the
context of a comparison
with models offered by
Haas, Yuasa, or others
where similar size
tables start at $5000 to
$7000. Our tables are an
outstanding value where
they suit the
application, but they
are not suitable for all
applications. The Tormach rotary tables
have differences which
can be important in
certain situations. The
more significant
differences are noted
here.
Haas and other manufacturers quote 15 arc seconds backlash. Our tables will have 30 arc seconds of backlash. On an 8" table 30 seconds of angle amounts to 0.0006" at the outer edge of the table.
Any table should be locked in place during heavy milling. Conventional CNC tables have integral pneumatic table locks, designed to be automatically actuated. Tormach has manually operated levers for the table locks.
Tormach tables use hydrodynamic (oil film) bearings. There are no ball or roller bearings internal to the table.
Tormach motorized tables rotate at 1800 degrees per minute (5 RPM). Most servo driven tables move much faster.
