Tormach CNC Mill Duality Lathe
Tormach Duality CNC Lathe
The Duality Lathe™ is a unique tool in the world of CNC with two operation modes. Away from your PCNC, it functions identical to a traditional manual mini-lathe; however, when mounted on to the bed of the PCNC 1100, it becomes a small CNC prototyping lathe at a fraction of the cost of a free-standing CNC lathe.
In manual mode, the Duality Lathe operates as a conventional mini lathe. It offers infinitely variable speed with two gear ratios, 4-way tool post, tailstock, and other accessories.
In CNC mode, the Duality Lathe is mounted to the PCNC 1100. Using a rigid quick change lathe tool post mounted to the spindle cartridge of the PCNC 1100 and CNC lathe software (both included), the precision motion of the PCNC 1100 controls lathe operations in the X and Z axes.
Whereas a manual lathe carriage moves left and right, in CNC mode, the mill table moves the Duality Lathe left and right. Similarly, whereas a manual lathe cross slide moves in and out, the mill spindle head moves up and down when used in CNC mode.
All conventional CNC lathe operations are available; turning, cut off, boring, drilling, even threading! There is no more need for threading gear changes, radius attachments, or taper attachments. You can turn any taper, radius, or curve you can draw.
Additionally, the Duality Lathe includes an integrated lathe spindle clamp, allowing the lathe to be used as a fixture while milling. Just tighten the spindle clamp and your work is now ready for milling flats, slots, drilling, or other finishing operations using the PCNC 1100. The spindle clamp includes a 360 degree index wheel allowing easy indexing for opposing flats, square heads, hex heads, or any other indexing operation. You can also add the optional Duality Lathe 4th axis for true simultaneous 4 axis milling of work held in the lathe.
The Duality Lathe includes a 3 Jaw Chuck, MT2 Dead Center, Tool Post Mount, Alignment Mount, Quick Change Tool Post, wrenches, lathe control software, and all necessary cables. It also comes with the following tool holders: cutoff holder, boring bar holder, Morse taper #2 holder, turning/facing holder, and turning/boring holder.
The Duality Lathe does not include a control computer. It cannot be used with flood coolant and is not recommended for heavy duty turning operations.

Mach3 (M3) is the current release of the operating software for the Tormach PCNC mill and Duality Lathe. It is based on a general purpose CNC control program known as Mach3. This document covers the current version of M3 designed to be used with the Duality Lathe when used in conjunction with the PCNC Mill. This software should not be confused with that which runs the PCNC 1100 Mill.
